What is detox?

The term detox, derived from the verb "to detoxify," is often misused and wrongly associated with weight-loss diets. Less drastic than fasting, detox isn't intended to cause weight loss but to rid the body of accumulated waste. The concept is simple: it involves cleansing the body by opening the excretory organs, the exit doors for toxins.

The body has five major organs that help eliminate waste from the body: the liver, intestines, kidneys, skin, and lungs.

When the body is congested, these organs are overworked and cause an overload that will impair their proper functioning. It is then good to seek a return to balance by eliminating anything heavy and superfluous. You could then, for example, opt for a detoxifying treatment based on draining plants that will act on the excretory organs.

When should you opt for a detox cure?

Excesses of all kinds will have an impact on our body, both in terms of fatigue and the toxins accumulated in the liver. For a comprehensive cleansing effect, it is recommended to do a cleanse at each change of season, especially in autumn and spring.

Clogged up during the winter, the body needs a good cleanse to rebalance and regenerate. In spring, the body and mind need a makeover to get back on track.

Also, a cure is particularly indicated in cases of poisoning (food, tobacco, alcohol, environmental), in support of liver failure or even during the removal of dental amalgams.

Protect the liver and stimulate its functioning

As the primary detoxification center, the liver metabolizes the food we eat and breaks it down while protecting it from the harmful effects of toxic compounds. It is therefore essential to protect the liver's integrity so that it can effectively carry out its synthesis, transformation, and storage functions.

Taking food supplements helps maintain healthy metabolic functioning, increase levels of glutathione , the liver's natural antioxidant, and to the stimulation of the mechanisms of liver detoxification .

The following compounds work synergistically for maximum effectiveness:

  • Microalgae like chlorella and spirulina protect the liver and eliminate toxins and heavy metals. Characterized by its chlorophyll content, chlorella is known for its ability to accelerate intestinal cleansing. Spirulina, on the other hand, is rich in polysaccharides and phycocyanins, which give it powerful antiviral properties and stimulate the immune system. In addition, these algal compounds contain molecules capable of binding toxic metals like lead, mercury, aluminum, etc.
  • Olive leaves contain oleuropein which exerts a wide range of antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral actions.
  • Known as a tonic, rosemary extract has the ability to protect the liver and stomach. It is also recommended in cases of extreme fatigue.
  • The flavonoids in rosemary are powerful antioxidants, helping to neutralize free radicals and thus prevent the onset of cardiovascular disease.

Finally, dandelion root is also of interest because it has the power to stimulate liver and biliary function. A natural diuretic, dandelion root is rich in lactones, inulin, as well as vitamins and minerals.

The effects of the treatment on the body

As with any detoxification process, temporary phenomena may occur at the beginning of the treatment (nausea, headaches, slight skin rashes, etc.) depending on the "degree of clogging" of the body and the sensitivity of the person. It is therefore generally recommended for sensitive or hyper-reactive people to start the treatment little by little and then continue the treatment normally. For example, if you opt for a tablet-based treatment, you can start by first dividing the dosage by two for 3-4 days and then continue the treatment at the usual recommended dose.

Foods to favor for a good detox

  • During a detox period, don't hesitate to eat products rich in fiber (whole grains, legumes, fruits and vegetables) to help your intestines regulate themselves.
  • Generally speaking, prioritize homemade meals, fresh fruits, and vegetables. At the same time, when it comes to animal protein, opt for lighter meals with lean meat or fish.
  • Lemon, a great detox ally. Drinking a glass of lemon juice is a great way to start the day. Its diuretic properties stimulate kidney function and aid in the elimination of toxins. It also aids digestion and hydrates the body, especially when combined with warm water.
  • If you can, eliminate (at least for the duration of the treatment) coffee, alcohol and fruit juices from concentrate in favor of mineral water and 100% pure fruit juices.

A detoxification treatment allows the body to do a major clean-up by eliminating as many pollutants as possible that tire and weaken the body and mind (tobacco, alcohol, processed foods, etc.).

Clearly, detox is good for the body but also for morale. It can even become a healthier way of life, thanks to a return to a healthy lifestyle that no longer burdens the metabolism with various excesses.
